Discover the world with Jessica Smith

To take advantage of the resort’s shuttle service, please book your airline reservations (not included in the Retreat Package) into Liberia International Airport. As you choose your flight, please remember that check in time is approximately 4pm on Saturdays and check out is on the following Saturday. Blue Spirit only has rooms during the retreat – Saturday to Saturday and not immediately before or after. Some past participants have stayed the day before in Nosara or the day after at an airport hotel such as the Hilton Garden Hotel. Many however have flown in on the Saturday and left the following Saturday with plenty of time for travel.

It will take approximately 1.5 hours from the airport to the Blue Spirit. After a full week of fun, we highly recommended taking a flight out later on Saturday or stay one more night at the airport hotel. Taxis are readily available from the small town of Nosara to the resort or from the closest airport hotel to the airport itself.

First time to Costa Rica? First time to Blue Spirit?
No worries, you’re in great hands. Jessica’s Team will take great care of you, the friendly and experienced staff at Blue Spirit will as well. Blue Spirit is an one of a kind facility that was built for yoga and meditative retreats. Shiva Rea, Rodney Yee, Kishna Das and many other spiritual leaders frequent Blue Spirit. It’s such a comfortable, beautiful and magical place we keep returning there! Its location is magnificent, perched on a cliff in the jungle over looking the pacific ocean! It’s breathtaking! Actually, you’ll probably fall in love as we did!

Yoga/athletic clothes

stretch with yoga

Casual cool comfortable clothing (It’s a very casual place. It will be in the 80’s-90’s during the day and high 70s at night. Wear what you feel good in….If you want to wear a dress at dinner- go for it. If you want to wear your yoga clothes all the time- go for it. Even sarongs/covers over your suits are seen in the dining hall. )

Sunscreen, Old running shoes (they may get dirty or wet on some excursions you may pick.)

Water shoes (Depending on the tide….parts of the beach have flat rocks that you may have to go over if walking into town.)

Rain poncho, Sunglasses, Journal, Hat

Reusable water bottle (the water is very safe at the resort and they also provide a water dispenser outside our yoga studio)

yoga at the beach

Swimming suits and cover (the resort’s infinity pool is also slightly salty and very pleasant!)
Flip flops
tea tree oil
Yoga mat (My favorite is the brand- Jade Yoga Mat. Hey guys, they have extra long mats….74”!). Blue Spirit does have yoga mats available for your use if you prefer not to bring one. If you choose to bring one, you will be able to leave it in the yoga studio. No worries about lugging it back & forth)
Yoga towel (Not required)

Blue Spirit is a gorgeous highly energetic place. It is also in the rain forest. They employ dozens of gardeners, who not only keep it looking pristine, they also fight back the jungle. The facility is as insect free as one could possibly make it. We will go on record saying there are very few bugs at Blue Spirit. What you will also appreciate is that there are amazing families of Howler Monkeys around the property.

Reusable water bottle (the water is very safe at the resort and they also provide a water dispenser outside our yoga studio)

Random TIPS

Arriving

Getting off the plane, go through immigration, collect your bags and head for the exit. Look for the men with signs for Blue Spirit (sometimes they are outside the doors with the other resort vans). They will take good care of you and your luggage. They will usually stop at a gas station during the drive for passengers to get snacks & drinks. We recommend using the restroom as it could be over an hour depending where they stop. If you need local currency, stop at the ATM in the airport.

Toiletries

Blue Spirit provides shampoo, conditioner and body wash. It’s organic locally made. It’s quite nice. The resort reclaims some of its water so if you bring personal soaps, they like to ask that they are biodegradable.
There is a boutique where you can purchase toiletries, clothing, jewelry, yoga and beach wear, etc.

Cash

You don’t need much of local money unless you plan a lot of outings into town, cab ride to get there or on excursions and for one dinner out. ($100 USD is equal to approx 55,000 Colones). We’d recommend $150USD or 84,000 Colones) Blue Spirit will have you put a credit card down at the front desk where incidentals can be charged to including extra massages or services. The cafe accepts U.S. dollars too. If you do have local money, make sure to have small bills as well. Some of the restaurants in town ONLY accept cash – local or American dollars. There is no ATM on site, but you can ask your taxi driver to stop at the bank in town.

Excursions

There’s much fun to be had in Costa Rica. If you would like to do an excursive please contact the front desk at Blue Spirit when you arrive or anytime thereafter. Excursions are usually available up to 24 hours before the scheduled trip.

Shots

We’ve had questions about getting them….there is NO requirement. It’s all personal preference. We have not received any shots and feel perfectly comfortable. You may feel otherwise. If so, here is the link to the CDC website. http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/costa-rica.htm

There will be a 1-hour orientation on Sunday morning held by Blue Spirit for all guests who are staying at the resort for the week. They will explain how things works, good times to walk to town on the beach due to the tide, you’ll meet all the massage therapists, etc. You will be reminded by us to attend and when you arrive, they will tell you the time of the gathering.

MEDICAL SERVICES IN NOSARA

From a general health perspective, Costa Rica has high health standards in the entire country, and is considered one of the safest destinations in the developing world. If you have a health care provider in the country of your origin, you may want to inquire before your travels about their coverage policy, when traveling to Costa Rica.

English-speaking doctors have offices located 15 minutes from Blue Spirit, along with dentists.

A hospital is located within a 45 minutes drive in Nicoya, or for serious conditions an air lift is available to a hospital with excellent and Western standard medical care in the capital of San Jose within 45 minutes.

There are no shots or immunizations required to come to Costa Rica.

MEANS OF COMMUNICATION, OFFICE NEEDS, AND ELECTRICITY

Phone: We have a phone to use for the guests for calls within Costa Rica (free of charge) and international calls (phone cards can be purchased at front desk). We also recommend the use of Skype or other Internet phone services. WiFi is available at no charge everywhere on the premises (except Tents and Eco-Cottages), and the use of voice over Internet is easy, inexpensive, and reliable.

If you like your loved ones at home in the US, Canada, or Europe to connect with you and leave messages during your stay at Blue Spirit they can call: +1 845-6884-2007. This line connects with our offices in Costa Rica & the US at US calling rates.

If you need to reach Blue Spirit from within Costa Rica, dial the following numbers: 2656.8300 / 2656.8228 (both numbers are only valid from within Costa Rica).

Cell Phone: There is cell phone service on the premises that supports local Costa Rica cell phones and international phones (though this is expensive).

WiFi: Wireless Internet is available at no cost and can be accessed via personal laptops for use of E-mail, Skype, or any Internet-phone calls. Please, note that Blue Spirit does not guarantee connection to all types of laptop computers and does not provide a technician for WiFi access.

Electricity: The voltage throughout the country is 110, the same as in North America. Travelers with appliances set for 220 will need an adapter that changes the voltage and allows for use of a different plug.

CANDLES & INCENSE

For reasons of fire safety we don’t allow any candle or incense burning in any of the accommodations. We do allow the burning of candles and incense for ritual or teaching purposes in the classrooms, however, only if the flame is attended to at all times.

MONEY

Any extra spending while being at Blue Spirit (i.e. for activities organized through our reception desk, like surf lessons, horseback riding, canopy tours, or Wellness services) and any consumption at our Café-Library can be charged on your credit card. Therefore we recommend not bringing too much extra cash from home (a maximum of US $500 should be sufficient).

The US Dollar is widely accepted in Costa Rica, so exchanging US Dollars to Costa Rica Colones is not necessary. Smaller denominations of $20 or less are easiest to cash. The exchange rate is approximately 500 Colones per US Dollar.

There is an ATM machine and bank, which is a 10-minute drive from Blue Spirit. The ATM and Bank only accept VISA Cards and disperse Costa Rica Colones.

TIME ZONE

Costa Rica is on Central Standard Time, six hours behind Greenwich Mean Time and one hour behind EST in the States. It does not use daylight saving time – which means that when there is daylight saving time in the US, then Costa Rica is on MST (2 hours behind EST).
